Friday Snippets: the gift
This week's Friday snippet follows the same character as last week's. He decided his story was more important than the WIP I had just started, so has taken over. Characters! I don't know! I hope you enjoy it and I would love to hear any feedback. It's rough, unedited first draft prose!
When she stops, I do too. She pulls something over her head and hands it out to me. “I would like you to have this.” She lowers her eyes bashfully. “It is not much.”
I hold my hand out and she drops a tied length of leather cord, looped through a circle of wood, onto my palm. I look closely at the trinket. The wood is dark, possibly ebony. The rough shape of a mouse has been carved into it, representing Vestra, the goddess of the home.
“The gods thank you,” I mutter.
Esi shakes her head. “I have not given it to the gods. I have given it to you, Cael.”
I close my hand around the trinket. I can’t remember the last time someone gave me anything. I can’t understand why she has. A real smile sneaks up on me. “Thank you.”
If you want to take part in Friday Snippets (and you should because it's fun!) you can find out more about it here.
